NATIONAL DV FACTS
- Domestic violence results in nearly 2 million injuries and 1,300 deaths nationwide every year (CDC 2003).
- In 2002, 76% of domestic violence homicide victims were female; 24% were male (Fox and Zawitz 2004).
- Nearly 5.3 million incidents of domestic violence occur each year among U.S. women ages 18 and older, and 3.2 million occur among men. Most assaults are relatively minor and consist of pushing, grabbing, shoving, slapping, and hitting (Tjaden and Thoennes 2000a).
STATE DV FACTS
- The latest release of crime statistics for Florida showed that while domestic violence related crimes have decreased.
- Homicides have increased 47% and domestic violence aggravated assault increased 37%.
- In 2005, there were over 120,000 domestic violence reported incidents.
- Nearly 200 of the above reports resulted in death.
LOCAL DV FACTS
- From January - June of 2006, there were over 4000 reported domestic violence incidents in Orange County.
- 12 of those cases resulted in death.
- Orange County had one of the highest increases in domestic violence state wide (FDLE, Oct 2006).
