Program Spotlight: Shelter – Katie’s Story

March is Women’s History Month, a time dedicated to celebrating the achievements and resilience of women throughout history. These women, and countless others like them, have demonstrated remarkable courage in the face of adversity, refusing to be defined by their circumstances and instead forging their own paths to success and independence.

One such example is the story of *Katie, a survivor of domestic violence who found refuge and support at Harbor House. Katie had sustained abuse, facing physical and emotional harm, compounded by the challenges of limited English proficiency. Despite these hurdles, upon arriving at Harbor House, Katie began to thrive. With the assistance and guidance provided by the Emergency Shelter’s staff, she secured employment within days, breaking free from the cycle of financial dependence and reclaiming her autonomy.

Throughout her time at Harbor House, Katie exhibited unwavering gratitude for the sanctuary it provided her. She expressed appreciation for the support she received, acknowledging that without it, she would have remained trapped in a harmful situation. As she continued to rebuild her life, Katie diligently saved money, accumulating significant savings of $2,800, a testament to her determination to secure a better future for herself.

Katie’s journey took another positive turn as she was accepted into the Emergency Shelter’s Extended Stay program, granting her the opportunity to live rent-free for up to a year. This transitional period would enable her to continue saving and working towards her goal of securing permanent housing.

Additionally, Katie embarked on the process of obtaining her driver’s license, further enhancing her independence and mobility, with the support of Harbor House’s resources and partnerships with community organizations like Catholic Charities.
